MUMC 80th Anniversary Dinner
2024 is a big year for Australia’s oldest climbing institution: Melbourne University Mountaineering Club turns 80!
Founded in 1944, MUMC helped to pioneer technical rock climbing in Victoria, with members putting up classic routes all over the state, becoming one of the founding members of the Victorian Bush Search & Rescue (who also celebrated their 75th anniversary this year), even venturing into the wilds of Tasmania to be the first explore the south west's adventurous climbs and bushwalks.
The club has spawned a few offshoots over the years: three quarters of the founding members of the Victorian Climbing Club were members of MUMC in the 1950s, and the Victorian Speleological Association has similar roots.
Eighty years is a long time, and a full accounting of the club’s history could fill a book or two, quite a bit beyond the scope of a Bogong Blog! In fact, there might be a book on that subject coming before the end of this year!
To celebrate this milestone, MUMC will be hosting a reunion dinner and drinks reception for alumni on Friday, October 11, 2024. Tickets are on sale now, available via https://www.trybooking.com/CTBSB
