Camelbak began in 1988 after bicycle enthusiast, Michael Eidson, competed in a 100-mile race in the gruelling summer heat of Wichita Falls, Texas in the United States. Water is essential for surviving this type of race and the race setup offered very few places to refill a water bottle. As an emergency medical technician by trade, Eidson decided to design his own water refilling station by filling an IV bag with water and slipping it into a white tube sock. Then he packed his invention into the back of his bike jersey, putting the thin hose over his shoulder and clamping it with a clothespin. Read more
With this design, Eidson invented hands-free hydration. With this invention Eidson was able to finish the race without having to stop for water while other racers laughed at him. Eidson named his product CamelBak and Jeff Wemmer, a competitive cyclist, was so impressed by Eidson’s design that he started bringing the packs to races to sell them. In 1993, Jeff became an employee of CamelBak and later embarked on a road trip to keep the start-up running during very tough times.
Although it took a lot of courage, conviction and imagination to evolve CamelBak from an IV bag in a tube sock to an internationally renowned brand, today the company’s core values remain the same. CamelBak has grown to become the world's leading maker of hydration solutions. Bogong is proud to offer these innovative products as a leading stockist of Camelbak products.
