As usual, he decided to pack six energy bars for the ride, with the only energy bar available on the market. After many trials of baking recipes with his mother, Erickson finally came up with the recipe for the original CLIF Bar, a better tasting bar made with nutritious, wholesome ingredients to sustain energy. The CLIFBar was named in honour of his father, Clifford, the man who introduced him to wilderness adventures and encouraged him to follow his passions in life.
In 1992, CLIF Bar officially launched and became an instant hit with cyclists and climbers. Starting with the distribution of the product at local bike shops, outdoor stores and natural food retailers, it soon grew to include outdoor adventurers of all types. Today, CLIF Bar is available around the world, including at Bogong.
CLIF Bar has also always had a focus on creating better products and organic ingredients and organic farming are at the forefront of its sustainability efforts. From 2002 to 2013, the company purchased 190 million kilos of organic ingredients. In 2012, CLIF Bar’s headquarters was awarded LEED Platinum certification, and the company has continued with its dedication to reduction, recycling and composting, by diverting 85 percent of its office waste from local landfills.
