The company specialises in producing rope for four sectors: sports, safety, industry and adventure parks. Edelrid was founded by Julius Edelmann and Carl Ridder in 1863. The company began as a manufacturer of braids and cords. Julius Edelmann was a salesman and mountaineer. Carl Ridder was a technician, who specialised in braiding machines.

In 1953, Edelrid invented the modern kernmantle rope, heralding the birth of modern climbing technique. In 1964, Edelrid developed a rope capable of withstanding multiple falls, which would become the forerunner of modern dynamic climbing rope. In 1977, Edelrid's twin rope technique was accepted and adopted as standard climbing practice.
In 2000, the company developed the 9.8 mm Dynalon rope – the thinnest diameter single rope available at this point.
In 2009, Edelrid became the first rope manufacturer in the world to ensure that all its ropes fulfil the stringent bluesign® environmental standard. In 2010, the company also received the EMAS / DIN ISO 14001 certification for environmental responsibility.
All their rope is made in their factory in Isny, Germany, and it's all bluesign® certified - indicating that no materials that threaten the environment are permitted in the manufacturing process.
