Icebreaker
Icebreaker is a brand that was originally founded by Jeremy Moon in 1994. The company began as a specialised producer of merino base layer long underwear. This concept was created as a result of Moon being introduced to a merino wool farmer in New Zealand who his girlfriend stayed with while backpacking on remote Pohuenui Island in Marlborough. As Moon developed the Icebreaker brand as a producer of 100% pure New Zealand merino wool, the company soon expanded from its roots in New Zealand to international markets. Beginning in Australia, the company began to also sell its products in several European countries, as well as, the United States and Canada.
Today, the Icebreaker brand continues to thrive as a sustainable company by maintaining exclusive contracts with select farmers for the production of garments made from natural merino wool fibres. The company also supports environmental and social ethics, as well as, animal welfare as a part of its production methods. In the 2018 Ethical Fashion Report, Icebreaker was awarded an A+ rating.
Icebreaker wool clothing is designed to offer protection in a variety of extreme conditions. Merino wool was selected for these garments because of the protection that it offers to the sheep that live in New Zealand's Southern Alps mountain range. This region experiences scorching summers coupled with freezing winters and the sheep depend on their wool for survival.
