The Petzl brand originally began in the 1930s when Fernand Petzl began exploring caves with his friend Pierre Chevalier. With gear that was only designed for climbing and hiking purposes, the two soon discovered that they would need better gear for the purposes of exploring deeper caves. Read more
As a result, Petzl began to develop new equipment including nylon rope, which eventually replaced caving ladders. With this new equipment, the team was able to successfully explore the Gouffre Berger in France in 1950, marking the first 1,000 metre cave descent and establishing a world record for caving at the time.
Later in the 1960s and 1970s during further expeditions, Petzl continued to experiment with vertical safety technology, which resulted in the development of rope ascenders and later the first mountaineering headlamp. In 1975, Petzl as a company was born with the establishment of the first company headquarters in Crolles, France.
Today, the Petzl name is synonymous with headlamps and climbing equipment. Many of the products developed by the company have helped to make vertical sports, such as rock climbing and mountaineering, more accessible to recreational climbers. In addition, the company now produces safety equipment for a variety of industries, including rescue work, roofing, tree care, firefighting and more. Petzl equipment is perfectly adaptable for both work and recreational use.
