The company, Cascade Designs, originally began after its founders, former Boeing engineers, Jim Lea and Neil Anderson discovered that they needed to find a new line of work after being laid off from the Seattle aerospace giant. Eager for a new project, they decided to team up with experienced mountaineer, John Burroughs to design a better sleeping mattress for the outdoors.
At the time, air mattresses did not offer enough insulation from the cold and were prone to leaks. In addition, closed cell foam pads simply did not offer enough comfort. Designing a mattress that was lightweight, warm and comfortable soon became the challenge that resulted in the creation of Cascade Designs, Inc. in 1972 when Jim and Neil filed for a patent for Therm-a-Rest pads - the world’s first self-inflating mattress.
The design was based on the discovery that open-cell foam had memory. Using this concept the pair designed a mattress made from the foam to be covered with airtight fabric. A valve permitted the inflation of the pad, which soon became the product that would evolve as a worldwide standard for outdoor sleeping comfort.
Today, the company continues to achieve new milestones with acquisitions of companies offering superior products. They have also stayed true to their founding principles of providing relevant and innovative products with exceptional quality.
