If you are buying your harness online here are some basic instructions for fitting a rock climbing harness. Always make sure you read the instructions which come with your particular harness.
1. Start by loosening the straps on the leg loops of the harness. Not every model offers adjustable leg loop straps.. Once you have adjusted the leg loop straps, you should then loosen the strap for the waist belt.
2. Step into the climbing harness and make sure that the waist belt is right-side up and the leg loops and belay loop are not twisted or crossing. Make sure that the belay loop is facing toward the front of the harness. Use the “left” and “right” markings, if available, to ensure that you have put on the harness correctly. The metal buckles on the leg loops should be on the outside of the legs.
3. Make sure that the waist belt fits above your hips and then tighten it so that it is firm and secure. A good test as to how firm is that you should be able to slip your fingers behind the waist belt but have no extra space. Then check if you have extra adjustment in the system both larger and smaller so that the harness can be used with differing amounts of clothing and to accommodate changes in your waist size over time.
4. Next, you should adjust the leg loops, if they are adjustable, so that they also form a snug fit although they do not need to be as firm as the waist. As previously noted the buckles are on the outside of the thighs. Some harnesses come with fixed leg loops. The advantage of this is that they are lighter but they need to be carefully fitted.
5. The final step is to make sure that all buckles are secure and threaded as intended for your harness type. If you have doubl back style buckles it is ESSENTIAL that the webbing is indeed doubled back. Ensure you read the manufacturer’s instructions about operation of the buckles. Now that you have secured, your harness, you can test it out.
