Head lamps generally come in two beam types. These are flood and spot beams. Flood beam are used to provide light over a wide but not necessarily a long distance. They can be used to perform general tasks within the camp, including repair work. If you want to be able to view long-distances at night time, a spot beam offers the best option and is excellent for helping you to navigate a trail at night time. Select a spot beam based on the beam distance to find one that will be suitable for your needs.
While high lumens head lamps generally provide brighter light, the manufacturer of the head lamp will determine how well the product works for producing light. However, it is important to note that a high lumen head torch will consume battery light faster than a head lamp with a lower lumens number.
Most headlamps operate on lithium batteries to ensure that they still work under cold weather conditions and can last for many hours. While you may prefer a headlamp that offers multiple battery power options, keep in mind that the more batteries the headlamp features, the bulkier and heavier it will be.
For more extreme conditions, you also want a water resistant headlamp that can withstand exposure to wet conditions, including rain and snow. Some headlamps are even designed to handle immersion for brief periods of time in shallow conditions.
In addition, you don't only need to use a headlamp if you want lighting in dark conditions, torches and lanterns make good stationery lighting options and can provide the light needed to illuminate your camp.
