Welcome to the Bogong Newsletter

Since our last email we have had a few drops of new gear from DMM, Salomon, Clif Bar, Fixe, La Sportiva, Prana and Mont. That means new climbing gear, new trail running gear and a new range of sleeping bags (scroll down for more on that).

Over the next couple of months we also have a few out-of-store events happening. First up is REEL ROCK on 14th Nov – our annual film night at the Astor Theatre. On 28th Nov, we're running a La Sportiva Shoe Demo @ Urban Climb. And, on 3rd Dec, North Walls climbing gym is hosting our DMM Gear-Breaking Night. Plenty to look forward to... for more, read on below.

Bogong Equipment will be involved in REEL ROCK once again in 2019. DMM Dragonfly

Much-anticipated flexible-stem micro cam

DMM Dragonfly size 1

We had a very small shipment of these arrive earlier in the year, but we're now re-stocked! These micro cams have had a lot of hype worldwide. Some of you might remember seeing them at our DMM Gear-Breaking Nights last year.

The DMM Dragonfly is a flexible-stem, double-axle micro cam. We've handled these, and they have a comfortable trigger with a narrow design. They're ideal for placing deep in narrow cracks, and for marginal placements. The DMM Dragonfly uses the 'magic' camming angle of 13.75 degrees, which is widely regarded as the optimum angle for the best combination of holding power and range.

We have six sizes: 1–6. The size 1 DMM Dragonfly is the smallest DMM certified climbing cam, with a range down to 7.8mm. The largest DMM Dragonfly, size 6, has a range that goes up to 28.3mm. The larger size Dragonflies (4, 5 and 6) complement the smaller DMM Dragon Cams, overlapping with size 00–1 DMM Dragons.

DMM Gear-Breaking Night

@ North Walls

DMM Gear-Breaking Night 2018

There's no shortage of events for us these next few weeks... Bogong Equipment will be heading to North Walls climbing gym in Brunswick to set up our gear-breaking machine with a representative from DMM.

DMM Climbing staff Chris Rowlands is travelling over to Australia from Wales. Not only is he very knowledgeable on how gear works (and breaks) – Chris worked on the DMM factory floor before moving into its offices – and is thus the ideal person to discuss gear nerdism with, he'll also be bringing a suitcase full of DMM historical gear, new gear in the works and current gear for you to take a gander at.

This evening is a must-go for gear nerds. Bring along your old climbing equipment (that you're happy to break), put it in our gear-breaking machine and see how, where and at what force it breaks. Then, discuss! (Or, just stare.) This is a great evening to learn where and how gear breaks, and how strong it is.

On the night, we'll be selling special edition Australian DMM Tour carabiners. The proceeds will go toward local cliff care.

About Us

Bogong Equipment was founded in 1989. Everyone who works at Bogong Equipment is a climber, hiker, mountaineer or runner. We have first-hand experience in cragging, multiday bushwalking, alpine climbing and trail running. We use the gear we sell. That means, we can tell you how a product truly performs in the field. That's how we only select the best gear to stock our shelves.

Our stock room in our brick-and-mortar store on Little Bourke Street, in Melbourne, is filled with purpose-designed, technical equipment. With our vast selection of gear, it can be tricky to know where to begin. Especially if you don't know exactly what you're looking for. That's why we employ knowledgeable, experienced staff. We can help you get equipped for your remote trekking expedition, your ice-cap crossing, climbing your first peak or simply your next wander in the hills.
