Welcome to the Bogong Newsletter
Hello, all Bogong fans, and welcome to a new year of gear. We have new trail running, hiking, climbing and mountain gear in from Ultimate Direction, Outdoor Research, Salomon, Red Chili, Edelrid and more.
Next week is the first of the events we're involved in in 2020: the Red Chili Urban Tour. Here's a chance to try out Red Chili shoes during your regular gym session. The tour takes place nationally, hitting Melbourne first, for three days. Red Chili will be touring through Northside Boulders (Brunswick), Boulder Lab and North Walls Indoor Climbing (at North Walls, there will be Edelrid belay devices and other gear to test out too).
Also, our info sessions kick off in April, with our popular navigation workshop. More on that below...

Navigation Workshop and Field Trips
with Merv Trease
Merv's Navigation Workshop and Navigation Field Trips are back this year. These sessions are opportunities to learn the essential bush safety skill of navigating with map and compass.
We hold the workshop in-store, upstairs at Bogong Equipment. Merv and his crew will run through how to use a map and compass. This session is also appropriate for people getting back into it, or who need a refresher.
This year, there will be two Navigation Field Trips (to give more people the opportunity to join us). It's a full-day affair in the bush, where you will put the skills your learned in the in-store workshop to practice in the field. (Note: You must attend the in-store workshop in order to attend a field day.)
All of these sessions usually book out very fast – sign up to be notified when bookings open, below.

Ultimate Direction 5.0
The 5th iteration of UD's popular carry solutions
Ultimate Direction was the first company to introduce the entire hydration pack concept, in 1985. Every time Ultimate Direction releases a new line of carry solutions (vests, handhelds, waistbelts), they've been improved, and not just for the sake of making changes. UD works with top endurance athletes to fine-tune their gear, and this 5th iteration of their series is no different. Here are the main changes:

Outdoor Research X-Gaiter
New super gaiter
Add warmth to your mountain boots with the Outdoor Research X-Gaiter. These super gaiters go on top of your mountain boots to give your boots the extra warmth you need for places like Denali, without the cost or bulk of a warmer boot.
Insulated with Primaloft® Aerogel (which is used by NASA), the Outdoor Research X-Gaiter is an industry-revolutionising overboot that is streamlined, lightweight and compression resistant.

Recap: DMM Gear Breaking Night
@ North Walls
Back in December, we held a DMM gear-breaking night at North Walls Indoor Climbing. DMM is probably the greatest climbing hardware manufacturer in the world. Most of their equipment is still made in their factory in Wales. And, it's from Wales – DMM HQ – that Chris Rolands, who has worked in several departments at DMM for many years, flew out for DMM's Tour Down Under 2019.
This year was an informal evening in the café area at North Walls, where members of the public were invited to bring along old pieces of gear to break in our 'gear-breaking machine'. The idea being to see at what force and where their gear breaks, and discuss.
Once again, thank you all for your participation!

Bogong Equipment was founded in 1989. Everyone who works at Bogong Equipment is a climber, hiker, mountaineer or runner. We have first-hand experience in cragging, multiday bushwalking, alpine climbing and trail running. We use the gear we sell. That means, we can tell you how a product truly performs in the field. That's how we only select the best gear to stock our shelves.
Our stock room in our brick-and-mortar store on Little Bourke Street, in Melbourne, is filled with purpose-designed, technical equipment. With our vast selection of gear, it can be tricky to know where to begin. Especially if you don't know exactly what you're looking for. That's why we employ knowledgeable, experienced staff. We can help you get equipped for your remote trekking expedition, your ice-cap crossing, climbing your first peak or simply your next wander in the hills.
