Gazetted in 1929. Arthur's Pass National Park was the South Island of New Zealand's first national park. The park covers 114,394ha and streches from the eastern high-country of the Waimakariri basin across the rugged mountains of the Southern Alps and down to the lush West Coast forests. It offers extensive hiking and mountaineering possibilities as well as other outdoor activities.
Popular walks include Harper Pass (4-5 days) and The Three Passes (4-6 days) as well as many shorter walks
