Alpine Climbing and Mountaineering
For alpine climbing a jacket needs to be short enough so that a harness can be worn and operated unimpeded. It is also important to pay attention to the hood design to ensure it will fit over a helmet. High chest pockets are preferred also to be clear of a harness. A good strong 3 layer waterproof breathable fabric is preferred.
Bushwalking
For general bushwalking and hiking many people prefer a longer line jacket such as some of the classic designs by the Australian company Mont. In our generally warmer conditions these often allow the user to hike in shorts with coverage from the jacket. Overpants are thus only needed as a last resort. For rough and wet places such as Tasmania or New Zealand a solid 3 layer breathable fabric is preferred. This offers the maximum protection from the elements. Whilst these jackets are heavier you will be pleased to have one if the weather cuts up rough. For day hiking or walking in milder conditions one of the lighter garments utilising lightweight 3 layer or even 2.5 or 2 layer will suffice.
Fast and Light
For activities such as trail running, cross country skiing or active short walks we have a number of ultra light jackets including the very popular Outdoor Research Helium. This weighs just 180 grams and squashes up to next to nothing. This type of jacket is also popular with travellers.
Most outdoor jackets feature durable water repellent (DWR), which is a finish that causes precipitation to bead up and roll off of the jacket. However, the DWR finish is not indestructible. You will need to keep your jacket in good condition or regularly reapply the treatment to your jacket as part of the maintenance routine to ensure that your jacket continues to offer optimum performance in wet conditions. See our tips page for details on how to do this.
