PETZL GRIGRI® CHANGES

The new Petzl GRIGRI® main changes are that the new GRIGRI® now has the same lowering handle and the same cam geometry as the GRIGRI® +. The new GRIGRI® also has a metal block to stop the rope jumping under the handle when loaded. The new Petzl GRIGRI® rope range has increased to 8.6–11mm diameters, with the optimal range 8.9–10.5.

As before, the GRIGRI® is still an assisted-braking belay device designed for experienced belayers.

Compatible with a broad range of rope diameters, the new Petzl GRIGRI® is also compact, making it suitable for both the gym and the crag.

Feeding out the rope and catching falls with the GRIGRI® can be done using the same techniques that you use with a standard, tubular belay device. However, the assisted-braking function is activated when a climber falls. Holding the brake side of the rope helps engage the camming mechanism, therefore it is important to always hold the brake side of the rope.

The new design of the handled camming mechanism gives you exceptional descent control.

Bogong Opinion

The Petzl GRIGRI® is an assisted-braking belay device that our staff continue to use. Over the years, the design has become more compact, with changes mainly associated with rope diameter (a wider range, now). The main takeaway is that it is an effective assisted-braking device, that with practice is easy to use. It's relatively lightweight for bringing to the crag, and can take some of the stress out of catching a fall, and be a real help on long days belaying your partner on a project.
