Cicerone began over forty years ago with guidebooks to some of the best climbs in the Lake District. The business was founded in 1967 when Walt Unsworth and Brian Evans, out of frustration with the lack of suitable guides to areas of the English Lake District, came together to produce a climbing guide. Nowadays they have an extensive range of guides to hiking destinations around the world. Read more
Walt is a writer and Brian is an artist and printer. With the help of their families, they were able to build a strong team. The guides became popular and with many sales, the team used the proceeds to create each new guide. This system worked well and they were able to produce dozens of guides each year as the company grew.
Since 1999, Cicerone has been developing under the ownership of Jonathan and Lesley Williams. However, the new team has continued to produce high quality guides by reinvesting in the company in the same way with the sales proceeds of previous guides.
Cicerone specialises in producing guides for the outdoors. They have guides on the Himalayas, all of the National Trails of Britain, Scotland, and the most comprehensive range of titles on the European Alps available in the English language.
These days, Cicerone now produces over 320 guidebooks for walking, trekking, climbing, mountaineering and cycling. These guides cover the UK, Europe and some of the most interesting regions of the world. Each year, roughly 30 new guides are created with fully updated editions for each guide as they are reprinted.
Cicerone guides are written by outdoor people, especially for outdoor people. They also work with specialist outdoor organisations and solicit reader feedback in order to every new guide.
