26 Grivel

Grivel invented the first ice axe, the first modern crampons, as well as the first front points. Never a brand to rest on its laurels, it’s known for re-inventing gear in ways that nobody else thinks of. For instance, the Grivel Machine, an ice axe created in 1996, revolutionlised ice tool design. And it’s the shape that all manufacturers now try to replicate.
While Grivel has been boundary-pushing from the get-go, it is also a deeply historic company, rooted in tradition. Grivel products are still made in northern Italy, in the shadow of Mt Blanc. In this neck of the woods, they’ve been producing equipment since 1818.
Traditionally a mountaineering brand, Grivel are now branching out into other genres – like mountain running and rock climbing – producing unique hardware (such as Grivel Twin Gate Carabiners). Yet, Grivel has always stayed strong in its core products: that is, ice tools.
Grivel ice tools have been used by Bogong staff, who can vouch for Grivel quality and ingenuity. One of our Bogong staff members, Hans-Peter (aka HP), once wore crampons of another brand while crossing a glacier. He was forced to constantly bash snow out of his crampons; whereas, his climbing partner – who wore Grivel crampons – never had to clear snow from her crampons once, thanks to Grivel Anti-Balling Plates. Why did they work better? Simply because Grivel technology works.
Grivel craftsmanship is top-notch. Grivel ice axe heads are hot-forged – a technique that allows steel fibres to be manipulated in a way that creates a stronger product. What’s more, the Grivel factory is run on only solar energy. That means you can purchase their products with a clearer conscience.
