Hiking the Western Arthurs in Winter
Tasmania's Western Arthurs are not the first choice for a bushwalk in June. The short days and frequent snowstorms see almost all walkers opting (perhaps sensibly) for the Larapinta Trail, North Queensland or the doona cover. Not everyone is sensible though. Curious to see just how bad it could be, Andrew Peters, Bogong staffers Jack Chenoweth and David Blundy and Wilderness Shop staffer Tim Blundy packed their woollies, headed south and attempted a winter traverse of the Western Arthurs in June 2012.
‘The Western Arthur Range is subject to some of the worst weather in Tasmania,’ warned the guidebook. ‘Violent storms and snowfall occur every summer’. ‘That’s lucky’ we thought – we were going in winter.
Adventurers, Survivors, Motivators
Warren Macdonald and Margo Talbot made a special appearance at Bogong on Thursday 10th May.
In 1997 on a trip to Hinchinbrook Island in Queensland Warren was trapped in a rock fall for two days. This led to him becoming a double amputee but that is only the beginning of the story . . . .
Margo overcame a teenage nightmare of drug addiction and depression to become one of North America's top ice climbers . . . .

Paz's totally excellent, non-bogus, Tassie climbing adventure
Bogong staffer, Paz, heads to Tassie in search of some classic climbs, some R&R and the perfect jaffle. It had come to this. The crux of the problem you could say. How to fit so many ingredients into a jaffle iron without breaking poor Betty's hinges. Fried Egg, Ham, Salami, Feta, Nimbin Natural, Olives, Capsicum, Tomato, sun dried tomatoes, mushies and most importantly, love. I put the billy on the boil to deliberate how best to overcome such a challenge. The entire day's success depends on this jaffle. Because this isn't merely a jaffle. It's a work of art. And if it doesn't work out now, we'll have to try again.
Bogong Boys do it tough in the Alpine Challenge
Over the weekend of the 17-18th of March, the Alpine Challenge, one of Australia’s toughest and most scenic mountain runs was held in the spectacular Australian Alps. The event route commenced at Bogong Village situated on the Bogong High Plains Road and passed through well known scenic landmarks such as Mount Bogong, Mount Nelse, Mount Hotham, Mount Feathertop and the Fainters before finishing back at Bogong Village.
European Alps - A long walk
In mid 2006 Bogong owner Neil and his son Tim enjoyed an extraordinary journey across the spine of the European Alps. Starting on the sea in Trieste, Italy, their journey crossed five countries and many mountain passes to arrive back at the Mediterranean Sea in France at Menton 97 days later and both about 14 kilos lighter.
